Chefs take center stage

March 31st, 2011

Chef Julie Pepple with the help of Lutheran Home Chef, Javier Barrientos (pictured left), made it into the final round of Chefs for PATH.

PATH is a local non-profit organization that offers an array of services for people age 60 and older including Elder Abuse Intervention, Money Management, Caregiver Advisor, and much more. PATH is also part of the National Suicide and Prevention Lifeline.

On March 31, 2011, Luther Oaks participated in “Chefs for PATH: A Culinary Challenge,” one of PATH’s largest fundraisers. Chefs for PATH featured Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano, Luther Oaks, Mr. Beez Atrium Pub, Station 220, and Swingers Grille. These restaurants competed in a culinary challenge to obtain the most votes for the best cuisine.

Prior to the event, the Chefs were provided with the required ingredients of certified angus beef flank steak, shrimp, shallots, fresh ginger, chipotle pesto, mangoes, apple wood bacon, and limes to create 250 servings with no substitutions that would be served during the tasting round of the event. The chefs also received a list of regular pantry items that were permitted, but not required that could be used such as spices, herbs, dairy, stocks, and oils.

After tasting each restaurant’s dish, participants voted for their favorite. The top two restaurants then advanced to the Live Cooking Finale. Luther Oaks and Station 220 were the top two restaurants that competed in the Live Cooking Finale, and were judged by a panel of local celebrities.

The panel of judges made their decision and Luther Oaks came in second place by a difference of only one point. Luther Oaks also receive the most votes from the audience, taking home the People’s Choice Award.
