You are never too old or too young to start learning.   Several Lutheran Home residents are expanding their horizons and learning something new – they are learning to speak and read Spanish.

Recently, Elizabeth Velazquez, a Spanish speaking Lutheran Home employee, started teaching Spanish to residents.  The residents loved it so much that they started requesting formal tutoring sessions.  Now, Elizabeth is helping as many as 15 residents learn Spanish with the help of colleagues, Agustina Perez and Lidia Toledo.

One resident in particular, Randolfo, has been extraordinarily helpful during the classes.  Randolfo is originally from Cuba and speaks fluent Spanish.

“Learning something new is helpful for memory support residents,” said Sandra Mavros, Lifestyle Coordinator at the Lutheran Home.  “They are truly enjoying the classes, and they are fully engaged.”

At some point, we hope to incorporate the Shepherd’s Flock children (who are also learning Spanish) to develop a fun, intergenerational learning program.

The classes are another way that the Lutheran Home provides daily opportunities to empower vibrant, grace-filled living.
