Grandmothers attend grandson’s wedding through Skype

Recently, a grandson of two Luther Oaks residents got married in California. Unfortunately, the groom’s grandmothers, Mary Schlesinger and Lou Stites were unable to travel to the wedding; however, Luther Oaks staff helped the grandmothers attend virtually.

Several test runs were preformed beforehand with the family using Skype. On the evening of the ceremony, Mary and Lou were surprised with wedding decorations in the chapel, dinner and a wedding cake; additionally, each lady was even adorned with a corsage.

The ladies conversed with family prior to the start of the wedding and were able to see the exchange of vows. Even though they were many miles apart, both grandmothers were able to enjoy the wedding with family and friends. “Both Mary and Lou were amazed and grateful to be able to be a part of the special day,” said DavyLynne Wills, Resident Life Director at Luther Oaks.

This experience is part of Lutheran Life Communities’ It’s Never2Late (IN2L) technology – a system designed to optimize technology for older adults in every day life.

Luther Oaks residents a part of Christmas tradition

Residents of Luther Oaks and 5^th grade students from Pepper Ridge Elementary School gathered at CUB Foods in Bloomington, IL on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 to ring the Salvation Army bell.

Every week, residents of Luther Oaks have the opportunity to participate in activities as part of an intergenerational program. This particular week, residents were able to get out and make a difference in their community, and teach 5^th graders the importance and impact of philanthropy.

Ringing the bell for Salvation Army and mentoring school-aged children are just two examples of the many ways in which Luther Oaks residents are actively engaged in the community.

Rep. Dan Brady recognized as “Partner in Quality”

Illinois State State Representative Dan Brady was an honored guest today at Luther Oaks, a Lutheran Life Community. During his visit, he was presented with the “Partner in Quality Award” from Life Services Network (LSN) for his commitment to the advancement of quality and innovation in older adult services.

Luther Oaks bake sale benefits Alzheimer’s Association

During the annual Bake Sale on Wednesday, September 28^th, residents Viola Bayles and Joan Kalbacken, sell baked goods made by Luther Oaks residents and staff. All proceeds from the bake sale go to the Alzheimer’s Association. Luther Oaks proudly raised $300.

On Tuesday, September 27^th, Luther Oaks provided refreshments for the YWCA Retired Senior Volunteer Professionals (RSVP) Appreciation Open House. Around 150 people were in attendance.
